Understanding where you are on the Learning ladder
The Learning ladder1 explains the process and stages of learning a new skill. As you can see from the diagram we tend to learn sequentially moving through all the stages until mastery is achieved. Thinking about the process of how you learnt to drive will give you a good insight into this.
Many job seekers have a low awareness that their job-finding and skills-propositioning is poor and hence they are at the ‘unconscious incompetence’ stage, which is where they simply do not understand their situation. Candidates need to gain this insight (conscious incompetence) before they progress through the stages as it is only when candidates are aware of their need that they will able to prioritise their activities and be successful.
Research suggests that understanding this process is key to you managing your career. The reason why many talented people don’t get the success they deserve is because they don’t understand this process.
