What do I know about myself?
What takes your interest in your current work?
The starting point is to look at all of the activities which you currently undertake to notice if their are ‘clusters’ of activities that interest you more than others. Some personality types tend to claim ‘my job is rubbish and I don’t want to do it anymore’, which frankly is unhelpful. It is really unlikely that you dislike every aspect of your role because you wouldn’t still have the job if that was the case!
A more rational approach is to start inquiring into what bits you like and which bits you dislike. Completing our skills matrix would be an excellent place to start the process. Often it comes down to wanting to do less of X and more of Y. If that is the case then the conversation that we need to have is, what does that job look like and how can we help you get a job like that.
One of our recent clients was able to identify that he had ability with software but that it was part of a wider interest in communications which included both verbal and writing skills. Through a series of conversations, coaching sessions and some psychometric tools he was able to identify technical training as a potential career, as this typically involves writing manuals and guides and delivery in different environments. It remains work in progress.
