Creating your own talent pool pipeline!

An obvious example of a talent pool could be a graduate trainee scheme where bright individuals with potential but with little real work experience are actively nurtured.  Most large companies have a talent pool of people that are treated differently to other groups of people in the organisation. In a large company this might equate to 400 people in a workforce of 100,000.

“Any human being is really good at certain things. The problem is that the things you’re good at come naturally. And since most people are pretty modest instead of an arrogant s.o.b. like me, what comes naturally, you don’t see as a special skill. It’s just you. It’s what you’ve always done.”

Stephen Jay Gould, evolutionary scientist

What Do Employers Regard as Key Talent?

Contrary to popular belief talent management is not about a small but lofty elite somewhere up in the clouds.  Non-geniuses can still apply! It will certainly include individuals with exceptional talents – potential CEOs and prime ministers – but it’s mostly about those who have talent which is key to the organisation.  This is not necessarily as rarefied.

Often these people have scarce skills, or a particular skill-set linked to a particular product, or they have a particularly close relationship with key clients - something which is of particular value to the business.
